Amy Coleman, MD

Founder & CEO

Dr. Amy Coleman is CEO and founder of Wellsmart Medical Services, a functional medicine clinic located in Lexington, Kentucky. She is also author of the book Discovering Your Own Doctor Within. Dr. Coleman completed her family medicine residency from University of Kentucky and pursued secondary training in classical chinese medicine and Harvard’s japanese acupuncture for physicians program.

She started her career as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force, where she established new, innovative models of patient care design for the military which are still employed today. In her work as the youngest and first female commander of the Special Operations Clinic based at the European Air Force Headquarters in Ramstein Germany, she guided global medical missions and completed two decorated tours of service in Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Throughout her career, she was chosen as the dedicated physician for elite performance groups:  F-16 Fighter jet Squadrons, Special Forces units, one-through four star Generals, NATO officers, and U.S. Embassy members throughout Europe. In addition, she served as NASA’s  chief medical coordinating physician for Space Shuttle support missions.  After her eight year military career, she worked as an emergency room physician while completing the Institute of Functional Medicine fellowship; based on the Cleveland Clinic model.

Locally, Dr Coleman is on the board of medical advisors for Alltech and also served as medical director for the Weekly Juicery. She enjoys teaching,  exercising,  and competing with her two horses in equestrian showjumping with her husband Elmer, as well as spending time meditating in nature.
